Häufige Fragen
How does Amaryl (Glimepiride) work?
Amaryl (Glimepiride) belongs to a class of medications called sulfonylureas. These medicines stimulate the pancreas to increase natural insulin production. At the same time, they help the body's cells respond better to insulin. These two actions help lower the blood sugar levels in your body. Lowering glucose levels decreases the risk of diabetes-related complications.
If I take Amaryl (Glimepiride), do I still need to take insulin?
Amaryl (Glimepiride) is not a replacement for insulin. Only your doctor can decide whether or not you also need to take insulin in combination with this medication. Insulin-boosting medication is often prescribed in conjunction with Amaryl (Glimepiride).
If your blood sugar levels are extremely high or extremely low, you may experience blurred vision, dizziness or drowsiness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you are sure you can perform these activities safely.
What is the recommended dosage of Amaryl (Glimepiride)?
Your doctor will decide which dosage of Amaryl (Glimepiride) is best for you, depending on your age, general health and the other medications you are currently taking.
However, in general the recommended starting dosage of Amaryl (Glimepiride) is 1-2mg per day, taken with the first main meal of the day. If necessary, this dosage may be increased to 2mg, taken once a day.
The recommended dosage for elderly people and patients with kidney, liver, adrenal or pituitary problems is 1mg once daily.
If you are taking Amaryl (Glimepiride) in combination with insulin, the recommended dosage is 8mg per day. 8mg is also the maximum recommended dosage per day.
